New York's Sacred Food

Two Essential Pizza Stops

No visit to New York is complete without a proper slice. Joe's in the Village for a classic foldable slice at lunch, and Grimaldi's coal-oven pies under the Brooklyn Bridge for dinner — Manhattan and Brooklyn, same day.

Joe's Pizza
7 Carmine St, West Village
The original NY slice. Cash only, ~$5. Fold it and eat on the street.
Friday Lunch · Manhattan
Grimaldi's Pizzeria
1 Front St, DUMBO, Brooklyn
Coal-fired brick oven. Under the bridge. Sit-down pies only.
Friday Dinner · Brooklyn

A Note from Uncle Greg
Jude,

New York is one of the great cities of the world. It was built by people who came here with nothing and decided to make something out of it anyway. For four days, it's yours.

Walk fast. Look up. Fold your pizza. Say thank you to the person holding the door. Stand on the right on escalators and walk on the left.

The Yankees game, pizza in Brooklyn, and walking across the Brooklyn Bridge — those are the things you'll remember twenty years from now. I hope you leave with great memories, a full stomach, and a desire to come back.
With love — Uncle Greg

Downtown — One World, Brooklyn Bridge & DUMBO

🌍
Morning · 9:00 AM
One World Observatory
Top of the Western Hemisphere's tallest building. At 1,776 feet the views stretch to New Jersey, Long Island, and the Statue of Liberty. The sky-rise elevator with a time-lapse of New York's history is an experience before you even reach the top.
🕊️
Late Morning
9/11 Memorial & Reflecting Pools
Steps from One World Trade. The two reflecting pools in the footprints of the Twin Towers are genuinely moving. Worth a quiet visit before lunch.
🍕
Lunch · ~12:30 PM
Joe's Pizza — 7 Carmine St, West Village
The most famous slice in New York. Cash only. Order the plain cheese, fold it in half, eat it on the street. That's the whole lesson.
🌉
Afternoon · 2:00 PM
Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge
One of the great free experiences in the world. The 1.1-mile walkway takes about 30 minutes. Start from the Manhattan side at City Hall. Stunning views in both directions.
🌊
Afternoon · ~3:00 PM
DUMBO & Brooklyn Bridge Park Waterfront
Cobblestone streets, the Manhattan Bridge arch framing the skyline, and Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1 — arguably the best view of Lower Manhattan from the water's edge.
🍕
Dinner · ~6:00 PM
Grimaldi's Pizzeria — 1 Front St, DUMBO
Coal-fired brick oven pizza right under the Brooklyn Bridge. Sit-down pies only. Try the margherita or the Brooklyn Bridge pie. Go early — the line is real.

🏛️
Mid-Morning
Grand Central Terminal
Two stops south on the Lex line. The Main Concourse is one of the great rooms in the world: Beaux-Arts stone, the astronomical ceiling, shafts of light through the clerestory windows. Ten minutes and you'll remember it forever.

Sunday · July 19

Mass at St. Patrick's & Acela Home

Morning Mass · ~10:15 AM
St. Patrick's Cathedral — 5th Ave & 50th St
The seat of the Archdiocese of New York. Soaring Gothic Revival arches, extraordinary stained glass, Sunday Mass in the heart of Midtown — spires rising between the skyscrapers. About 10 minutes' walk from home. A fitting way to close the trip.
🦁
Late Morning
NY Public Library — Patience & Fortitude
Three blocks from St. Patrick's. The marble lions guard the steps of one of the great library buildings in the world. Stand between the lions, look back down 5th Avenue. Five minutes, free, unforgettable.
🌆
Late Morning
Final Walk — 5th Avenue & Midtown
Rockefeller Center, the Plaza Hotel, maybe a final slice. The city will give you something new right up to the moment you leave.
🍽️
Midday · ~12:00 PM
